How did your research inform your products and the way they use or challenge conventions?
Acknowledging the prevailing conventions and expectations inherent to specific genres, I conducted thorough research encompassing both genre conventions and audience preferences to enhance the quality of my music video. The insights gleaned from this research provided me with a strategic advantage in crafting entertainment products that resonate with and remain aligned with people's tastes and preferences.
First of all, as mentioned in my Genre Conventions blog, I have concluded many conventions usually found in alternative rock music videos. For instance, I had acknowledged that for this specific genre, artists usually aim for a basic look for everything, from making the colors deep and low hue to adopting very simplistic costumes for the talents. Most of the times, there are performancing scenes as well, but as stated, performance with instruments seem to be out of my league to achieve. Therefore, I tried to keep my music video as simple as possible, with "most of the time" deep-colored background dominant (brown), and characters wearing comfortable clothing (comfortable outfits).
However, there are instances in which I encountered challenges in maintaining the desired ambiance regarding lighting and color palettes, particularly during scenes depicting romantic interactions among the characters. In these instances, we opted for vibrant, warm lighting, inadvertently resulting in brighter scenes than initially intended. This departure from convention necessitates a reassessment of the aesthetic coherence within certain sequences. Furthermore, I have decided to break the convention of being performance-based for alternative rock music videos. Since instrumental performances are unachievable, I only included lip-sync performance, which is in my control.
With regard to my audience research, it became evident that a significant portion of the participants lacked sufficient familiarity with the alternative rock genre. Consequently, their ability to discern and articulate their preferences regarding music videos within this genre was constrained.
