Case Study - Cyclo

Cyclo - 1995

Cyclo (French: Cyclo) is a movie directed by Vietnamese-French director Tran Anh Hung. The film is set mainly in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, with a mainly Vietnamese cast, and also stars Hong Kong film star Tony Leung Chiu Wai. The warning in the film was filmed largely in Ho Chi Minh City and Hong Kong in co-production with Liberation Films and Salon Films Studio (Hong Kong).

The film is about an 18-year-old orphan who is only known by his profession of a cyclo (pedal-taxi) driver, struggles on the streets of Ho Chi Minh City. When his vehicle is stolen and he is forced to pay it back he takes jobs from a local crime boss (robbing and killing people).

The film excellently won the Golden Lion Award for Best Film at the Venice Film Festival in 1995. In 1995, the film was banned from being shown in Vietnam. At that time, the film's ban caused many reactions within the film industry. Up to now, many people in the world believe that the Cyclo case is an "injustice" against a film talent like Tran Anh Hung.

On April 6, 1994, Deputy Minister of Culture and Sports Nguyen Trung Kien signed Decision No. 501 HTQT/QD agreeing to allow Giai Phong Film Studio to provide services for Lazenec Film to make the feature film Cyclo directed by Tran Anh Hung in Vietnam. In order to have the script approved by the leaders of the Ministry of Culture and Information, experts, leaders of the Cinema Department, the Department of International Cooperation of the Ministry of Culture and Information, and A25. When the script content meets the requirements, with the support of A25's own architecture, the Cinema Department issues a script content appraisal document and the leaders of the Ministry of Culture and Information sign a decision to allow film production.

From April 21 to May 6, 1995, recording real sound for movies in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City still had A25b supervisors.

Cyclo was banned from being shown because it reflected a painful society and violent scenes that were inconsistent with Vietnamese reality, in which could have a negative impact onto the country's image and therefore could restricts its intention to open the door to globalization after being closed up after the Vietnam War.

While being banned within the country, Cyclo has proven its quality and value through multiple international awards and recognition.

It has received the Grand Prix at the Ghent International Film Festival, as well as Golden Lion and FIPRESCI Prize at the Venice Film Festival.

This has shown that the past restricted media regulations of Vietnam had lead to many films that had high potential being banned and talented directors and filmmakers unmotivated with very limited freedom of expression.
